January 2001 Newsletter

From the President: – Bill Gillett

It is unbelievable that the year 2000 has passed us by so quickly.   Our quarterly Newsletter quickly became a bi-annual Newsletter.  As we reported in the September issue, the 2000 camp sessions were exceptionally good again this year, with over 600 young people being challenged in their faith.  Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen.  The list of contributors is so long, I can’t begin to list everyone who was involved.  Plans are well under way for summer 2001.  The camp schedule has been set, the theme has been selected, and most of  the directors have been selected.  Yet, there is still much work to be done and a number of needs to be addressed.   Several of the needs are addressed later.  Please take a few moments to read through this issue to see how you might help.  The Board of Directors would like to express our thanks and our appreciation to everyone who has given of their time, talents, and finances in the past so that every camp session would be an outstanding spiritual experience for every young person who attended.  May God bless you for your generosity.  The year 2001 marks the 28th year of Christian camping at LPBC.   We accept the challenges before us.

Membership Report – Bill Gillett

Our drive to collect LPBC membership dues has been reasonably successful.   We started by encouraging members to pay their dues at the fall festival.   According to our records,  51 people donated either cash or materials to cover their 2000-2001 membership dues at that time.  We then sent out approximately 115 letters to all charter members who had not paid and to everyone we could think of who might be a life or regular member who had not paid.  As a result of the mailing, we received dues from 21 people (18%).    Among these 21 people, one regular member became a life member($150), one charter member (Ernie Goggin) paid his dues for the next 5 years,  one charter member paid $20, one life member paid $200, and two life members paid $25 each, for a total of $700.  To date, 72 members have paid their dues.  This appears to be a record.  If you were not one of the 72, sending in your dues now would be a blessing not only to you, but  also to  the furtherance of the goals of LPBC.  Thanks.

Encampment Report – Chris Vidacovich

For many people, Bible Camp doesn’t start until the summer, but for the Encampment Committee and the rest of the Board of Directors, things are now in full swing preparing for the summer.  Most of the directors have been selected and they will be starting to put together their staff shortly.  The theme for the summer of 2001 is:  “For Such a Time as This” (Esther 4:14).   It won’t be long until the applications will be sent out.  Some things that  will be stressed on the application are:

  1. Please send in your application early.  It is very difficult to arrange the cabins, staff, food and T-shirts when the applications are sent in within two weeks of camp.  The Board has approved a $10 late fee if the application and entire deposit are not received at least 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the relevant camp session.

  2. Make sure the application is filled out completely.  Medical release form, week your child is coming, T-shirt size, Covenant agreement, etc.  The application changes each year, so please read it thoroughly.

  3. Make sure you send your deposit with the application.

  4. Please, do not send your child to camp with application in hand!   This creates undue hardship on everyone.  We cannot guarantee a place for your son or daughter if we don’t have their application ahead of time.   Please plan ahead so we can plan for adequate food, shelter and staff.

  5. If your son or daughter would like to share a cabin with a friend, please mark it clearly on the application and the directors will do all they can to honor the request.

Fund Raising Dinner- February 17th

There will be a fund raising dinner at the Elks Lodge in Rolla on Saturday, Feb. 17th at 6:00.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.  Tickets can be purchased from any Board member or call Diana at 573 364-3488.

2nd Annual LPBC Benefit Turkey Shoot – April 7th

The 2nd Annual LPBC Benefit Turkey Shoot will be held Saturday April 7th at LPBC.  Bring your 12 gauge or 20 gauge and have a great time while supporting LPBC.  The fun will begin at 11:00 am (rain or shine).  Prizes will include artwork, turkey calls, gift certificates, $$$, and much more!  Concessions will be available.  If you can make a donation to this event, or if you have any questions, call Kenny Light at (573) 308-3472.  See you there!

2nd Annual Family Work Weekend May 18th & 19th

Mark your calendars!!!  A family work weekend is scheduled for April 18th and 19th at LPBC.  It will consist of a campfire and hotdog roast on Friday night, a pancake breakfast and sandwich lunch on Saturday, and as much work as you can handle.  Families are encouraged to spend the night in the cabins (don’t forget your sleeping bags).  Bring your gloves, tools, and families and help get the camp ready for the new year.  Please RSVP to Bill Gillett (see above).

Fall Festival 2000

The fall festival was a huge success again this year.  Our sincere thanks go out to Donalie Stormes who directed the Fall Festival, to Sherry Ternes who was responsible for another great turkey dinner, to Laura Light who was in charge of the Silent Auction, and to the host of volunteers who made it all come together.   Not only did everyone have a great time, the event netted approximately $6000 for LPBC.  The silent auction alone made about $3200 for LPBC.  The number of people and businesses who contributed items for the auction this year was at least double what it was last year.  Many, many  thanks to all those who contributed to this great event.  The funds raised at the Fall Festival will go a long way towards paying down debt on the craft house and getting started on the new Director’s Cabin.  Thanks to everyone who  supported the Fall Festival.

Direct Deposit Donations

Five members have authorized their bank to make a direct deposit to LPBC each month.  The total amount of $70/month will help to pay the monthly bills throughout the year.  Of course additional direct deposits would be appreciated and would help  very much.  Please consider helping in this way.   For further information please contact Nadine Miller at (573) 364-2147 or write to LPBC at P.O. Box 251, Rolla, MO. 65401.

Lifeguard Training

Classes will be held in early 2001 to train lifeguards for camp this summer.  Please contact Chris Vidacovich at the address or phone number listed above if you are interested.

Site Maintenance Report - Kenny Light

I want to thank everyone who helped with “site maintenance” at LPBC last year.  Thanks!!!  I also want to welcome our newest member to the committee, Charlie Bruno.

Some of the top priorities of the committee this year are as follows:

bullet

Finish the interior of the new craft facility.

bullet

Construct a concrete headwall at the culvert under the main entrance road.

bullet

Repair shutters on cabins.

bullet

Repair a sagging cabin floor.

bullet

Purchase an industrial cook stove for the kitchen.

bullet

Plant trees, shrubs, and perennial flowers.

If you know of a good, used cook stove (or a great deal on a new one!), or would like to donate toward the purchase of one, please let us know.

We recently established a Director’s Cabin building fund.  The Director’s Cabin would serve as the director’s “office”, a meeting area for the director and counselors, and would provide lodging for the director’s family.  We currently have $1,000 in the fund, and need an additional $5,000.  Again, if anyone would like to donate toward this project, please contact me or another  board member.
